What About The Router

UPGRADE Your WiFi! 5 Tips You NEED to Know Before You BUY!

Most ISPs that rent modems also want to rent you a router. While there are pros and cons to renting a modem, youre almost always better off buying your own router, especially if youre using a high-end modem.

Routers are easy to set up compared to modems and cross-compatible from company to company, so even if you switch providers youre not going to be stuck with the bill for your pricey hardware.

Using your own router also gives you more control over your network, if you want to indulge your inner nerd and configure goodies like remote access and WiFi security.

A Router To Handle Network Traffic

The router is the heart of your home network. The router is usually the thing that will determine if you are happy with your network or not. This is especially true if you are more than two in your household, with many devices that need access to the internet at all times.

A router is a device that will route the network traffic that is coming in and going out . When it is connected to the modem and get access to the internet, it will share that internet connection with the LAN ports on the back of the router as well as to send it out wirelessly.

Because all network traffic is going through the router, the router can easily be overwhelmed if you would purchase a cheap router that cant handle the traffic. The router I recommend is the Asus RT-AC68U, a great router that can handle any type of traffic that you throw at it, to an affordable price as well.

A router can also offer other features other than just routing traffic. Some routers have USB ports so that you can connect an external drive and share files between your devices, both wired and wirelessly. Another common feature is to connect a printer and being able to print with any device in your home.

Do I Need Both A Router And Modem To Set Up Wifi

To set up WiFi within your home or office, you only need a router to get started.

A modem is a device that connects to your computer via an ethernet cable. A modem is not able to provide WiFi access by itself. A router can connect to your modem and share access with all your devices through WiFi.

Now, most ISPs provide a WiFi router that receives internet and distributes that signal throughout your home or office. So you only need a router for WiFi.

How Does A Smart Tv Compare To Set

You do not need a smart TV to get streaming Netflix movies or YouTube videos on your screen. The best streaming devices can stream those services and more to an older HDTV, or even a newer 4K TV. The leading models are from Amazon, Apple, Google and Roku. But, it’s worth noting that these streaming devices rarely offer more functionality than current smart TVs will provide. In fact, all of the device manufacturers we just mentioned have the same interface and app selections available in their respective smart TVs.

For example, the Roku Streaming Stick+, which costs just $50, delivers thousands of channels and apps. Those include nearly every major service, as well as hundreds of more obscure channels, ranging from Kung-Fu Theater to Victory Westerns. In fact, Roku offers more options than any other set-top box or any smart TV on the market. So if you don’t need to buy a new TV but do want smart-TV services, a separate, inexpensive streaming-media player is the prudent choice.

In addition, set top-boxes, such as the Roku Ultra, offer 4K content.

If you live in an Apple household and want your iTunes collection on the big screen, you’ll need an Apple TV, which is the only device that can deliver that iTunes connection. No smart TVs have apps for iTunes. The latest, 32GB iteration of Apple TV is $149 and includes Siri support for finding programs. However, it does not offer 4K Ultra HD support and has a limited number of streaming services.

What Do I Need To Create A Wireless Network At Home

1. A Broadband Internet connection

In order to set up an Internet-connected wireless network at home, you need a broadband Internet connection. Typically, you subscribe to an Internet Service Provider for your connection. Depending on where you live, you might have a choice of service providers. Cable companies, as well as phone companies often offer broadband Internet service as part of a bundle that also includes TV and Phone services. The bundled services can save you money as compared to purchasing the services separately.

There are three ways that broadband Internet service can be delivered to your home:

  • DSL: DSL is an abbreviation for Data Subscriber Line. This type of service is delivered to your home using your existing telephone line. The service is generally provided by your phone company, but it may also be available from third party ISP who shares the phone line with your phone company. DSL providers often offer an inexpensive starter Internet connection with download speeds of .5 to 1Mbps, as well as enhanced packages with faster download speeds. The download speed is limited by the distance from the phone companys local office to your home.
  • Fiber Optic: In some areas of the country, you can get a fiber optic Internet connection. It, too, is often included as part of a bundle of services with TV and telephone services. Multiple tiers of Internet service can provide download speeds of 50Mbps or higher if youre willing to pay.
  • Reading Your Internet Service Contract

Similar to your coverage, the contract aspect of things may or may not matter to you. If you already have service and just plan on adding Wi-Fi capabilities then you should already be familiar with your contract.

But if youre not, or if youve never signed up for internet before, here are a couple of things you might want to think about.

    Optimize Your Wireless Router

Your Wi-Fi router is the heart of your home network. It manages all the data and makes sure everything gets to the right devices. It also creates your Wi-Fi network.

Different routers have different Wi-Fi ranges depending on their hardware and the tech used to direct signals to specific deviceslike beamforming, MU-MIMO, and OFDMA. Most routers are good for an apartment or home under 2,000 square feet. And some long-range routers can boost Wi-Fi signals even further.

The location of your router can also make a big difference. Wi-Fi signals are just radio waves, and if youve ever tried to adjust the rabbit ear antennas on an old TV, you know how big of a difference a slight adjustment can make.

To get your Wi-Fi signal to every room in the house, try to put your router in a location where you can draw the shortest, straightest line to it from every room. Wi-Fi signals can be absorbed or deflected by large obstructions but do a good job of passing through walls and floors, especially if they hit them straight on.

Youre often somewhat limited in your router locations based on where your internet connection enters your house, but if you find you have a dead space in a nearby room, moving your router just a few feet might make all the difference.

How Do I Link My Devices To One Another

These days, most network capable devices from home entertainment to kitchen appliances, can automatically detect, and connect to, your network. This requires some sort of app or desktop program, but it can generally save you the hassle of having to tinker with IP addresses and so on. Many media streaming devices use DLNA, for example. Just make sure your connection device and smart appliance are on the same network.

That said, there are times when a bit more work is required, which is why its worth brushing up on basic networking, before you dive in. There was a time when Macs and Windows machines didn’t play that nicely together, but the latest operating systems are pretty good at recognising each other and tolerating one another on the same network.

You’ll usually access the router control panel through a browser by typing in the IP address for the router. It’s almost always or Similarly, the default login is often “admin” for user and “password” for password, but again, check the manuals. Remember, once you have set everything up make sure you change the username and password.

    The Digital Living Network Alliance

The Digital Living Network Alliance protocol was introduced to help simplify the process of sharing content around the home, allowing connected devices to “talk” to one another as seamlessly as possible over a wireless or wired network.

Optional: A Nas For Multimedia And File Sharing

If you have a lot of movies on your hard drive, then you should get a NAS. A NAS is a Network-Attached Storage, meaning that its a box with hard drives that you can connect to your network through cable. A NAS can do many other things other than just providing storage for all your devices, the biggest brands Synology and QNAP offers app stores where you can download apps, adding more features.

For example, some apps can help you do daily backups or your systems, apps that can help you create your cloud instead of using Google, OneDrive or Dropbox . But the most popular app that you can download to your NAS is PLEX, creating your own media center.

PLEX is a service much like Netflix, but its content is based on what you have. PLEX scans your media files like movies, tv shows, and music, and present it to you in a much better way. It downloads movie covers, trailers, soundtrack and information from the internet, populating the library. You can connect to it with any of your devices, both inside and outside your home, and watch a movie.

PLEX offers no content by itself, so its up to you to provide it. How you do that is not my thing to say If you want to get a NAS, Ill suggest you check out my recommended NAS which is sure to provide you with some cool stuff.
