Is A Mesh Router Better Than A Regular Router
With multiple devices working together to spread a strong, usable connection across a larger space, a mesh router is usually better than a single, standalone router, especially in medium to large homes. In a home or apartment that’s smaller than 1,500 square feet or so, a mesh router might be more hardware than you need.
Still, even small homes have dead zones, and mesh routers will help address problem spots like that better than regular routers. My home is 1,300 square feet, and a good example. With an average, single-point router like the one provided by my ISP, my 300Mbps fiber speeds typically plummet to double or even single digits in the back rooms farthest from the router. With a mesh router, I can still hit triple-digit speeds in those back rooms, which are about as fast as when I’m connecting closer to the router.
How We Tested Mesh
With just a few exceptions, testing for most Wi-Fi router reviews consists mostly of connecting a single device to Wi-Fi at various distances, trying to get the biggest throughput number possible and declaring the router with the biggest number and the best range the winner, at least in terms of raw performance. The problem with this method is that it assumes that a big number for one connected device divides evenly into bigger numbers for all devices. This is usually true for wired networking, but it doesnt work well for Wi-Fi.
Instead of testing for the maximum throughput from a single laptop, we used six, spaced around our test home, in order to simulate the real-world activity of a busy home network. The test home measures over 3,000 square feet, with three floors of living space and a garage with cinder block interior walls.
Because these tests simulated real-world traffic, they did a better job of modeling everyday performance compared with a testing tool like iPerf that simply moves data from one machine to another as fast as possible. We did similar testing for the latest version of our guide to standalone routers.
Putting devices in the right places is key to any mesh networks success. We started by placing the main router or node in the living room, in the center of our testing space, and connecting it to our cable modem via Ethernet.

How Is Mesh Networking Different Than Wi
A wi-fi repeater or extender can be thought of as an in-place upgrade because it extends and increases the Wi-Fi signal throughout the area. Extenders work well if your house or office isnt a large space. Its more cost efficient compared to the mesh network system. You dont have to swap out your existing router. There are some drawbacks when it comes to an extender vs. a mesh network though. Extenders can be difficult to configure and there is a possibility of the connection not being the same throughout the house or office space. A mesh network solves the problem of having dead spots within the space by incorporating different hubs placed around the space communicating with each other providing a better overall coverage. Strategically placing these hubs can mean all areas of the space will have an excellent connection. A mesh network would be best for larger spaces, its fairly easy to set up, and provides simple central management. Another important advantage of a mesh network setup is each hub acts like a separate router, which means stronger connections throughout the space. With that said, mesh networks systems are more expensive. And if you like your space to have a certain ambianceplacing numerous devices around your house or office may be a drawback.

Mesh Routers Worth Skipping
Router recommendations are all well and good, but what about the mesh routers I don’t recommend? Glad you asked — let’s run through the ones I’d pass on save for a good sale.
Let’s start with the dual-band Netgear Nighthawk mesh Wi-Fi system, which supports Wi-Fi 6 but doesn’t include an extra backhaul band. That means that your network traffic has to share bandwidth with the transmissions between the router and the satellite, but it also brings the cost down. At $230 for a two-pack, it’s tempting, but the performance was too shaky for me to recommend it.
Another dual-band option is the TP-Link Deco X20 mesh router. Currently available at $200 for a three-piece system with full support for Wi-Fi 6, the Deco X20 is similar to Amazon’s standard, non-Pro Eero 6 system, but it did a better job in my at-home tests of steering me to the right band, which raised its overall speeds. It’s a decent pick if you want a Wi-Fi 6 system with two extenders and you don’t want to spend too much, but a two-pack of the top-recommended Deco W7200 tri-band system costs just $30 more. Even without a third device, I’d rather have that tri-band two-pack than the X20’s dual-band three-pack.
It isn’t a top performer or a value pick, but the Amplifi Alien is a great-looking Wi-Fi 6 mesh router that lets you create a VPN-style connection to your home network when you’re traveling, which is a nice, unique feature.

We currently have the bog standard NBN router supplied by Telstra.
It barely covers my wife’s separate art studio room 35m away % loss, and my shed 40m away @ 70% loss.
So, after talking to the guys at JBHiFi, we bought a Netgear AX1800 MK63 Nighthawk Mesh WiFi 6 System.
Unboxing and setup was simple. The APP was helpful and I connected direct to the Telstra router. Both WiFi units run side-by-side. Getting the satellites to link was time comsuming but did eventually occur.
Our smart TV still uses the Telstra WiFi.
When the system was up-and-running, all seemed fine. Both routers worked fine and satellites were connected to the mesh and signal strength was very good.
However, every so often, one or both satellites would drop out. Also, the internet connection to the MR60 Netgear router would randomly drop out.
Then the app could not connect to the router. I re-installed the app. I also re-booted the Netgear router . After the re-install and re-boot, the system worked fine again.
Yesterday, the Netgear WiFI dropped out and stayed out. The router just sat there with the light blinking white. I unplugged everything, plugged it back in and it seems to be working fine again.
This is frustrating. I dont want to continually reset the router. Is there something I have sone wrong, or is the router faulty??

Connecting your media streaming box, gaming console, or home PC to a wired network produces a more reliable connection than a wireless connection, and some users may want the benefit of having an Ethernet connection to these devices. In general, while the main node often comes with an Ethernet port to connect your main mesh node to your home modem some companies, like Amazons Eero, do not build Ethernet ports into their satellite nodes. You can easily get a good router for less than a mesh network system. Nodes also dont cover the same range that a router/extender would, which is why you would need multiple throughout your space. This makes scalability more difficult. And lastly, the speed may still suffer if your space is bigger and you are very far away from the main router. It could be better than a traditional router/extender combination, but its far from perfect.
