Things That Make Smart Wi
Today, you can buy a new class of “smart routers”, specifically designed to cope with the demands of running a smart home. Here are five things that make smart Wi-Fi routers worth buying.
Why would you need to buy a new Wi-Fi router? Isn’t the one you get from your internet service provider good enough?
For some users, they’re fine. But if you’ve bought into the smart home revolution, there’s a good chance it won’t be adequate.
Today, you can buy a new class of “smart routers”. They’re specifically designed to cope with the demands of running a smart home. Are they right for you? Let’s find out. Here are five things that make smart Wi-Fi routers worth buying.
Is There A Smart Router
This new TP-Link smart WiFi router with AX6000 offers big performance and ease of use in one of the biggest router markets. With 1148 Mbps on the 2 speed, this is a very impressive performance. You can stream 4K and even 8K video easily by streaming them through the 2.4GHz band as well as 4804MBps in the 5 GHz band.
Which Other Router Features To Look For
Wireless routers come with a variety of features, and as is the case with just about everything, the more features you get, the more you can expect to pay.
Look for a router with at least four 10/100/1,000 Ethernet ports, which allow you to connect to wired devices such as desktop PCs, network-attached storage drives, and home-automation hubs. If you require faster throughput for large file transfers, look for a router that supports link aggregation. Simply put, link aggregation uses two gigabit Ethernet LAN ports to provide increased throughput . It also provides a fail-safe if one LAN connection goes down and can be utilized to load-balance your network traffic.
Having at least one USB port on the router makes it easy to plug in a printer or a USB drive and share it across the network, but with two ports you can do both. Additionally, try to choose a router that offers removable antennas. Some router manufacturers offer replacement high-gain antennas that will help boost performance, and there are a number of third-party antennas available. Just make sure your router supports whatever antennas you buy, or you’ll probably wind up with decreased performance.

Why Does It Matter Which Band My Device Connects To
When you connect a device to your router, Smart Connect will automatically identify the best available channel and assign the device to it.It is true that piling too many devices on one band might reduce its performance.Smart Conncet technology allows your router to automatically choose the most efficient device so that every device is able to reach its full potential.
Whats Wrong With Smart Connect
In theory, Smart Connect is a useful technology. However, the devil is in the details, and whether you get a good experience with it depends a lot on the specific router you have, the SoC it uses, whether you have the latest firmware for your router, and the way Smart Connect is implemented.
In my experience with reviewing routers, I noticed widely different results from model to model. For example, you can buy an expensive high-end router that has a weak Smart Connect implementation. Because of that, when you enable Smart Connect, you end up with download speeds that are significantly lower than usual. This means youve wasted your hard-earned cash by enabling a feature that promises ease of use but lowers performance. Other times, you may buy a cheap router and get an excellent Smart Connect implementation that delivers all the benefits without any drawbacks.

What Do The Different Wi
Nowadays, any router worth its salt will offer at least two radio bands, a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band. The 2.4GHz band operates at a lower frequency than the 5GHz band and offers better range because it is more adept at penetrating walls and other structures. However, it doesn’t offer the fat pipe and high-speed access that you get with the 5GHz band.

What To Look For In A Router
Most internet service providers give you a router and a modem or a combination of the two for a subscription fee that can add up over time. These routers may not be the best fit for your usage, so you might consider purchasing one that better fits your needs. Before buying a router, here are a few things to look for.
Wi-Fi signals within a home largely depend on the size of the home and the barriers that prevent signals from reaching their destinations. Fireplaces, mirrors, and thick walls are just a few common obstacles that block Wi-Fi signals. Look for a router that has the capability to reach the far corners of your home. Also, look for one that has a mesh network to extend the Wi-Fi capabilities across the home.
Router technology has changed over time. Make sure you have a router that uses the latest technology and has updated firmware. MU-MIMO is one such new technology. It stands for multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output technology. It allows Wi-Fi routers to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously. This decreases the wait time and improves network speed.
Routers have become a very important part of the connected home. Make sure you buy a router that you can control easily. The latest routers are easy to install and use. Some come with user-friendly apps that help you with guest networks, parental controls, user time limits, and network management.

What Is A Router
A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnetworks. It serves two primary functions: managing traffic between these networks by forwarding to their intended , and allowing multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.
There are several types of routers, but most routers pass data between and . A LAN is a group of connected devices restricted to a specific geographic area. A LAN usually requires a single router.
A WAN, by contrast, is a large network spread out over a vast geographic area. Large organizations and companies that operate in multiple locations across the country, for instance, will need separate LANs for each location, which then connect to the other LANs to form a WAN. Because a WAN is distributed over a large area, it often necessitates multiple routers and switches*.
*A forwards data packets between groups of devices in the same network, whereas a router forwards data between different networks.

Speed: Dont Pay For More Than You Can Use
If you like to stream movies in 4K, play video games, or just download large files, then the speed of your router is key. When you look at most modern routers, youll typically see a label like AC1700, AC3000, or AX6000. In some cases, the number will come before the AC or AX designation, which simply indicates whether it’s using 802.11ac or 802.11ax .
In either case, these numbers refer to the maximum throughput that the router can offer for all of the devices that are connected to it simultaneously, across all of its frequency bands combined. For example, a dual-band AC1700 router has a theoretical maximum speed of 1,700Mbps, but that’s split across both its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Similarly, tri-band routers usually have much higher numbers like AC5400 since that total speed is divvied up across three bands instead of only two.
While the numbers are theoretical, and you typically wont see actual speeds that match the listed numbers, you can use them to compare one router to another. For example, two AC1700 routers from different manufacturers are in the same general speed class , while an AC3000 router is going to be a lot faster.
If you arent sure how fast your internet is, you can contact your ISP or just connect your computer directly to your modem and run a speed test. Once you know the top speed of your internet connection, look for a router that can match it, and dont waste money on an expensive router thats significantly faster than your connection.

Understanding Wifi Standards: Wireless
Routers lead the pack when it comes to deploying the latest WiFi standards, and their client devices typically start incorporating the new technology six to twelve months later. For this reason, its best to future proof your home wireless network with the most current standards to make sure it can support the hottest products when they hit the market.
In 1999, Linksys pioneered WiFi technology with the release of the WRT54G router, but since then, WiFi standards have undergone a complex evolution:
- In 2012, WiFi significantly improved with the emergence of the 802.11ac or WiFi 5 standard, which packed almost triple the speed of its predecessor, 802.11n.
- The latest standard is MU-MIMO , which stands for multi-user multiple input and multiple output. Thats a mouthful, but what does it mean? This update to the 802.11ac standard improves the way WiFi interacts with multiple devices at once. Whereas single user routers serve data in a serial fashion to one device at a time, MU-MIMO routers serve data to multiple devices at once.
- For example, let’s say youre chatting on FaceTime while your children stream a movie on Netflix. With a SU-MIMO 802.11ac router, your devices have to wait in line while the router shoots data at them one at a time, leaving the other without signal. It may only be for a millisecond, but that moment without connection creates lag . With MU-MIMO, your router transmits data to both devices at the same time, creating a seamless experienceand happier kids.
Do I Just Need A Router For Wi
To have Wi-Fi in your home or office, you’ll need a few things:
- An active monthly plan with an ISP, such as a cable or phone company.
- A modem provided by the ISP .
- A Wi-Fi router. You don’t need a traditional router and a Wi-Fi router. A Wi-Fi router provides all of the features of a conventional router and adds on wireless capabilities.
- The Wi-Fi router is connected to the modem and configured to create a wireless network.
When you’ve got all of those things, you’ll have a Wi-Fi signal any compatible device can connect to and get online.

Easy Management Of Devices And Users
There are certain things you cant do with standard routers like:
- Managing users, especially if you arent tech-savvy.
- Understand the list of network-connected devices
- Change the routers advanced settings unless you have a Ph.D. in programming.
Smart WIFI routers come with accompanying apps that give you control over all the users on your WIFI, and you can be able to:
- Add parental controls for your children and teens.
- Stop devices from getting online or pause the whole network.
- Receive an alert every time anyone tries to access restricted content. You can decide to grant or deny access.
How To Use A Wireless Router
When you first connect to your Wi-Fi router youâll be prompted to enter a password, which is typically supplied by your provider and will be printed on the bottom of your router. Itâs usually a long and confusing series of uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, making it difficult to remember but also virtually impossible for others to guess. This is done in order to offer heightened security and protect your network from being used by others illegally.
Be sure to double-check when entering letters to make sure theyâre in either uppercase or lowercase, otherwise youâll have to enter the whole thing in again. Some routers have removable cards with all your log-in details written on them to save you from having to crouch around your router as you type in your password and details.
It should be as simple as that â your device will then connect to your wireless broadband automatically when in range. Once youâve connected your devices to the Wi-Fi you wonât need to enter the password again until you want to connect a new device.
If your password isnât recognised, or youâve connected and thereâs a signal but no service, then youâll need to contact your broadband provider to make sure everything is okay on their end.
