What Is The Ssid Number For Wifi

Find Out Whether You Have Band Steering

What is SSID

The most common reason to have more than one SSID on a single access point is using one SSID per frequency band. This may be pre-configured by your vendor or service provider. Typically, one SSID will contain the number 5, and the other name the number 2, pointing to the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands respectively. For example: my_wifi_2G and my_wifi_5G

  • If your router/access point has band steering, you should only have a single SSID for both bands, so that the access point can pick the best band supported for each device and the user does not need to think about it.
  • If you do not have band steering, you are better off with two SSIDs, but will need to keep in mind which devices support 5 GHz Wi-Fi and which do not. Naming the SSIDs to indicate new versus old equipment rather than numbers or standards may make this easier to manage and remember.

If you do not have band steering, but still go with a single SSID, you are essentially playing Wi-Fi roulette. Every device connecting will be making its own decision on which signal is the stronger and more appealing. In most cases this will be the 2.4 GHz signal, even for devices that would have performed much better on the 5 GHz band.

Log Into Your Routers Administrative Console

Go to your web browser, preferably on your computer, and type in the IP address to access the admin console. Some router manufacturers provide smartphone apps from where you can change the settings, while more expensive options come with built-in touchscreens.

To do this, type the IP address on the browser, and press Enter. Here, youll enter the routers username and password. If youve never changed these details, use the default logins that came with your router which can be found on its case or in the user manual.

If you had set a custom password and cant remember it, the only way out of it is to reset the routers default settings.

How to Find the SSID on a Computer: 6 Steps (with Pictures)

The SSID itself is not a matter of security, but on your access point, you can configure the SSID to be visible or hidden. A hidden SSID means it will not be broadcast, and will not show up when your average Wi-Fi capable device is searching for available networks.

For convenience, guest networks should always be visible, or you will likely end up spending an inordinate amount of time on helping your guests connect to the network.

Hiding your main network’s SSID is often recommended as a security measure. However, consider that:

    • Any Wi-Fi scanner will still be able to detect your network.
    • Hiding your SSID may negatively affect performance, because more requests are required to connect.

For performance reasons, we therefore recommend not hiding your SSID.

How Devices Use Ssid To Connect To The Internet

Whenever you set up a connected device for the first time, or when attempting to connect to a new network, you will be asked to configure your access to the internet. You’ll be typically prompted to scan for any available networks in your immediate vicinity, at which point you can pick the most relevant to your needs, whether that’s a personal home Wi-Fi or a business network.

Networks will either appear as open or locked. Open networks are free of immediate authentication checks and will let you connect without issue, although these will usually then ask you for registration information in a browser window. Locked networks, indicated by the padlock symbol next to the SSID, will require you to input a password as you try to connect.

However, this list of available networks will only show those that have been configured to publicly display their SSID or personalised name. To access any hidden networks you will need to input their SSID or name manually, alongside the password if necessary. To prevent a network from displaying on the list of available connections, you will need to choose ‘hidden’ or ‘disable SSID’ in the router’s settings.

Once your device is connected to a network, you can save its details and connect automatically each time you enable Wi-Fi.

This wikiHow teaches you how to see a wifi network’s service set identifier , which is simply the name of the network your computer is connected to. If you are connected to a wireless network, the SSID is the name of the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. Seeing a network’s SSID is as simple as opening your computer’s Wi-Fi settings and looking at the network’s name.

How Do We See This List Of Networks With The Hidden Wifi Ssid

Once we have the list of available wireless networks, we can try to connect to them. In case of a password-protected Wi-Fi network, we will have an extra step. By default, the wireless network we have just connected to will be saved to our device, so the next time we are within that networks coverage area, our device will automatically connect to it without having to re-enter the network password, providing and improved user experience.

This process does not only include the broadcasting access points, but also the client devices that do not only listen to nearby networks, but also request connection to previously saved wireless networks, bypassing the network name broadcasting by the access point. Therefore, the client devices do not only check for saved networks to connect to, but also constantly request connection to those saved networks in order to improve connectivity.

How To Find Ssid On Router:

You can usually find the SSID on your router printed on a sticker on the bottom or side. That wont help if someone has changed your router SSID, however. The majority of default browsers will follow this format. Any router worth their salt will be protected by WEP, WPA/WPA2 or even a WPS PIN. These are a default form of security for anyone connecting to a router they require the user to enter a password in order to access the routers internet. How To Choose The Best Ssid For Your Wi

It is clear that you require an SSID and also you can customize the SSID from the routers configuration page. But how to Choose the best SSID for your Wi-Fi Network? There is no simple answer to this but if you follow some basic rules, then you can create a personalized and secure SSID.

    • The first important point is do not choose a generic name for SSID such as Home or you name. The SSID should be unique as there is a good chance that there are multiple wireless networks near you.
    • Customize 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands separately. This can be a unique name followed by 2G and 5G respectively.
    • If your router supports band steering, then is better to have one SSID for both the Wi-Fi bands. Band steering routers automatically select the network band depending the clients ability and support.

    How to Change the Wi

Technically speaking, the name of your network does not need to be unique, but it is highly practical to have an SSID that will stand out on the list of available networks–unless, of course, there are no other networks around.

Usually, your router, extender, or other wireless access point comes pre-configured with one or more SSIDs. If your neighbours have equipment from the same service provider and vendor, it’s easy to end up with a list of very similar-looking and sounding names.

This can be both confusing and frustrating, especially for guests and others that are connecting for the first time.

How To Find Out What Your Devices Support

Band steering is becoming increasingly common in wireless access points. If you are in doubt about what is supported by your router, extender, or other access point, consult its documentation or contact your service provider if they supplied the equipment. Knowing what Wi-Fi technologies your computers, smartphones, and other devices support, is also a good idea.

What you want to look for is:

    • “Dual band” or “802.11 ac” in both routers/access points and wireless devices, means the 5 GHz frequency band is supported. If the latest standard mentioned is 802.11 n, it may have support for 5 GHz, but you may need to check the documentation more closely to find out.

    How Devices Use Ssids

Wireless devices like phones and laptops scan the local area for networks that broadcast their SSIDs and present a list of names. A user can initiate a new network connection by picking a name from the list.

In addition to obtaining the network name, a Wi-Fi scan also determines whether each network has wireless security options enabled. In most cases, the device identifies a secured network with a lock symbol next to the SSID.

Most wireless devices keep track of the networks a user joins as well as the connection preferences. In particular, users can set up a device to automatically join networks having certain SSIDs by saving that setting in their profiles.

In other words, once connected, the device usually asks if you want to save the network or reconnect automatically in the future. Also, you can set up the connection manually without having access to the network .

Most wireless routers offer the option to disable SSID broadcasting as a means to improve Wi-Fi network security since it requires the clients to know two passwords: the SSID and the network password. However, the effectiveness of this technique is limited since it’s easy to sniff out the SSID from the header of data packets flowing through the router.

Connecting to networks with SSID broadcast disabled requires the user to manually create a profile with the name and other connection parameters.
