Wifi : Understanding Wifi For Beginners
What does a radio have to do with surfing the web? Everything, when youre using WiFi! Did you know your wireless router uses the same technology as an old-fashioned radio? Well, the technology may be quite a bit more advanced, but it operates on the same basic concept: transmitting data over the air using radio waves.
Aim For Uniqueness And Memorability
This is the most important consideration when choosing a Wi-Fi name for your router. Itâs only a unique name that can distinguish your Wi-Fi from similar networks. Besides uniqueness, a Wi-Fi name should also be memorable enough, at least to the routerâs owner. When connecting a new device, you donât have to scratch your head trying to remember the name of your own Wi-Fi.
To ensure your Wi-Fi name is memorable, limit the usage of special characters. There are thousands of unique names you can generate just by playing around with regular letters. Mixing UPPERCASE and lowercase is fine. Also, you might incorporate a symbol or two within the name, such as a dot , exclamation mark , or question mark . The goal is to ensure the Wi-Fi name you choose is both unique and memorable.
What Does Wifi Stand For
WiFi, sometimes written as Wi-Fi or wi-fi, is often mistakenly thought to stand for wireless fidelity, but it doesnt not exactly. The term was invented in 1999 by a branding company to make the first standardized wireless protocol sound a lot cooler. It was, however, a direct pun on the audio term hi-fi , which caused the confusion.
A wireless network can also be referred to as WLAN, which stands for wireless local area network.

Don’t Forget To Make A Strong Wi
Besides creating a unique network name, you should also create a strong wireless network password to keep hackers out. Your Wi-Fi network password can be up to 63 characters long, so be creative. Rainbow Tables becomes impractical for cracking passwords longer than about 12-15 characters.
Make your Pre-shared Key as long and random as you can. It may be a pain to enter a long wireless network password, but since most devices cache this password indefinitely, you won’t have to enter it that often.
Which Is My Wi
If youre not able to access the router easily, you can still use another technique to work out which one is your network. Essentially, the strongest signal in your house is always usually the one coming from your router. So, even if the person who deals with all the technology in your home has put the router out of reach, youll be able to track it down by walking around your house with your device showing the available networks.
On an Android phone this is achieved by swiping down from the top of the screen to open the Notifications pane. Youll see a Wi-Fi icon which youll need to tap and hold. This will then open the Wi-Fi section. iPhone and iPad users can go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Now, look for the signal that is the strongest. If you find it at an adjoining wall to your neighbour then its possible that youre picking up theirs from the other side of the wall, so maybe keep going until youve explored the various rooms and can judge which network remains the most potent for the majority of locations.
Of course, youll need to know the password if you want to connect, so you may still need to access the router to find out. Or speak to whoever looks after the IT in your household to provide you with the help otherwise the only option is to turn off the Wi-Fi setting and rely on your mobile data plan until they can provide the necessary details.

What Is A Wireless Network Or Wi
A wireless network refers to a computer network that makes use of Radio Frequency connections between nodes in the network. Wireless networks are a popular solution for homes, businesses, and telecommunications networks.
It is common for people to wonder what is a wireless network because while they exist nearly everywhere people live and work, how they work is often a mystery. Similarly, people often assume that all wireless is Wi-Fi, and many would be surprised to discover that the two are not synonymous. Both use RF, but there are many different types of wireless networks across a range of technologies , while Wi-Fi is specific to the wireless protocol defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in the 802.11 specification and its amendments.
Change The Router’s Ssid
Once you’ve logged in, look for the navigation bar. For us, all of the options are along the left sidebar. For you, it might be sprawled across the top or bottom of the page, or it might be in a dropdown menu that’s tucked away into a corner.
Look for a section called Wireless, Wireless Networks, Wi-Fi, Wireless Settings, or anything along those lines. Click it and you should be brought to a page that lets you add any funny SSID names that you want. In some cases, it might have a more user-friendly label, like Wireless Network Name, in our case.
Type in your funny SSID, click Save, and you’re done. This will disconnect all of your devices, forcing them to reconnect to the newly-named network .
Use The Registry Editor To Change Network Name In Windows 11
This third method is the more complicated and dangerous way to change the network name in Windows 11. If you like to work in the Windows Registry or need to know what to change to build a script to edit a network name, these steps are for you.
You’re encouraged to back up the registry before making any changes to the file. You’ll be thankful later if something goes wrong during these steps. If you follow carefully, nothing should go awry, but a backup ensures you can restore the registry if you need to.
Open Registry Editor. The quickest way is to search for it from the taskbar.
Navigate to this registry key:
Expand the first key to reveal several other keys within it. Each key listed there corresponds to the different network adapters you have.
Expand one of those keys , and then select Connection beneath it. Just go down the list, unless you already know which key to open.
Look for Name on the right side. The value under the Data column identifies the current network name.
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you find the key corresponding to the network name you want to change.
Double-click Name, and edit the text so that it reflects whatever you want the new name to be.
Select OK to save. The change should take effect immediately, but if not, log out of your account or reboot your computer.
Use Windows Settings To Change Network Name In Windows 11
There’s a simple Rename option for your network adapters in Settings. It’s the method we suggest using since it’s by far the easiest to understand.
Open Settings, either by searching for it from the search bar or using the keyboard shortcut WIN+i.
Select Network & internet from the menu on the left, and then Advanced network settings from the right side.
Choose the network name you want to change, and then select Rename.
Enter a new name in the box, and then select Save.

How Does Wifi Work
For WiFi to work you need either a modem connected to a wireless router, or a wireless gateway, which is a combination of a modem and wireless router. These devices will be considered your wireless access point – a hub that generates wireless signal and allows wireless devices to connect to the internet.
To experience the best quality WiFi, you will need to be within the access point range. If you are too far from that range or on the edge of it, you can experience slow internet speeds, or you could lose WiFi connection.
Test Your New Network Settings
You have now updated the Wi-Fi network name and password. But before you pack up your laptop and go about your business, you should double-check to make sure everythings working.
Part 1: Test the wireless connection
Grab a device and find your new network name in the list of available networks. Enter your new password to make sure you can connect wirelessly. Its better to find out now than having to start the process all over again when youre late for a Zoom meeting or two minutes away from winning an auction on eBay.
Part 2: Reconnect other devices
Now that you updated the networks name and password, all the devices that were previously connected to your Wi-Fi network will need their information updated so they can reconnect. Remember that this doesnt just include all your computers and mobile devices, but smart TVs, smart thermostats, security systems, and any other devices that use your Wi-Fi network to connect.

How Do Wifi Extenders Work
Its important to note that WiFi extenders do not amplify or boost the wireless signal they help extend the wireless coverage area. The extender gets the internet access from the router and broadcasts its own signal into the space where the wireless signal did not originally reach.
Characteristics Of Good Wifi Names
Many people believe that WiFi names dont matter much, which explains why there are so many funny WiFi names, such as hack me or WillUmarryMe? or Top secret network or Drop it like its Hotspot. Yes, WiFi names are certainly not as important as WiFi passwords, but a good WiFi name can still make a huge difference, and heres how to pick one:

How Can I Find My Wi
There are a couple of ways to work out which network is your home one. The first, and the most reliable, is to go to your router and look for the card that identifies your network name and password. This may just be a sticker on the router itself that has this information printed on it, just in case the removable card gets lost . Sometimes the Network will be called an SSID instead, but it means the same thing.
In our example we show a picture of the back of a BT Smart Hub, one of the most popular routers used in the UK, but youll find the same network information on the back of any router, no matter which internet service provider you use.
As you can see, the Wireless Network is listed at the top with the name underneath . Under this youll see the password or network key. When entering that code, note that its all case-sensitive, so be sure to use upper- and lower-case letters to match those on the sticker. Weve blurred some of the letters on our example as a security precaution, but yours should all be legible.

Multiple Devices On One Ap
If several Wi-Fi devices all want to connect to a network, they can all use the same AP. This offers a convenient solution, making Wi-Fi extensible into environments where coverage for many users is needed. Problems arise, however, if too many people need access at the same time, all needing high levels of bandwidth. For example, if several users are watching high-definition video at the same time, they may experience drops in performance because congestion at RF layer makes it difficult to impossible for the AP to pass all the necessary packets in a timely manner.
What Is A Wireless Router
Wireless routers are commonly found in homes. They’re the hardware devices that Internet service providers use to connect you to their cable or xDSL Internet network.
A wireless router is sometimes referred to as a wireless local area network device. A wireless network is also called a Wi-Fi network.
A wireless router combines the networking functions of a wireless access point and a router. Read more about wireless routers.

How To Find Out What Your Devices Support
Band steering is becoming increasingly common in wireless access points. If you are in doubt about what is supported by your router, extender, or other access point, consult its documentation or contact your service provider if they supplied the equipment. Knowing what Wi-Fi technologies your computers, smartphones, and other devices support, is also a good idea.
What you want to look for is:
- “Dual band” or “802.11 ac” in both routers/access points and wireless devices, means the 5 GHz frequency band is supported. If the latest standard mentioned is 802.11 n, it may have support for 5 GHz, but you may need to check the documentation more closely to find out.
