What Should Your Wifi Speed Be

How To Choose The Right Internet Speed

3 simple WiFi tips you can do right now to fix your Internet speed!

Internet speed is measured in Megabits per second . And it’s a little known fact that you don’t actually need many Mbps for most of what you do online.

Browsing the web, for example, may require only 1-2Mbps. Streaming video in SD may require only 3Mbps, while streaming in HD may require only 5Mbps. To stream video in 4K quality, you’ll need about 25Mbps. And downloading a large file will take up pretty much all the capacity that’s available.

When choosing an internet speed, it’s far more important to consider how many people will be using your connection, as well as what they’ll be doing. That’s becauseinternet speed is a shared resource.

If you subscribe to a plan with a max speed of 50Mbps, for example, that 50Mbps is shared between every person and device in your household. If one person is streaming a movie on Netflix, the internet will be slower for everyone else using your connection at the same time. Faster speeds mean there’s more capacity to share: you can stream all the video you want and no one else will notice any slow-down.

As a rule of thumb, these are the NBN speed tiers you’d need for the following households:

Of course, the best internet speed for your household may not always be the one that’s available. Internet speed is often determined by the type of technology available for you to connect, as well as other factors like congestion and home equipment.

In Some Cases It Is Recommended To Reduce The Wi

6.1. Using too much emitted Wi-Fi signal power does not always mean that the network will work steadily and quickly. High signal strength can cause additional interference and errors in the network. If the radio in which your access point is operating is heavily loaded , the impact of intra- and interchannel interference may be affected. This interference affects the network’s performance as it dramatically increases the noise level, resulting in poor communication stability due to the nonstop forwarding of packets. In this case, it is recommended to reduce the transmitting power at the access point. If you didn’t find the transmitter power reduction setting at the access point, you could do it in other ways: increase the distance between the access point and the adapter as much as possible remove the antenna at the access point use an antenna with a lower gain .

6.2. The power of the access point transmitter in the router is usually 2-3 times higher than on mobile client devices . There may be places in the network coverage area where the client will hear the AP well, and the AP will hear the client badly or not hear at all . As an option, the transmitter power at the AP can be reduced to obtain a more stable connection,

What Is Good Internet Speed

According to the Federal Communications Commission , the good internet speed benchmark starts at a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps to perform everyday online tasks. Regarding what speeds you need for these common activities, your connection will need to meet the following minimum download speeds:

  • 1-5 Mbps for email and web browsing
  • 15-25 Mbps for streaming HD video
  • 40-100 Mbps for streaming 4K video and light online gaming
  • 200+ Mbps for streaming 4K video, online gaming, and downloading large files

How Fast Is Your Internet

Internet Speed Test

It’s important to understand that different internet speeds are necessary for different usage scenarios. So when you test internet speed, keep in mind that the question “How fast is my internet?” can only be answered in relation to what you want to use the connection for. While simply browsing the web can be achieved with low single-digit megabit per second speeds, streaming Netflix in 4K resolution will need at least a 25Mbps connection speed. Online gaming will primarily be influenced by your ping, with a smaller ping being better while publishing content on the web, like uploading large videos to Youtube will be primarily constrained by your upload bandwidth.

Why Is Wifi Called Wifi

WiFi is commonly mistaken for Wireless Fidelity. The WiFi Alliance, formerly known as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance, was looking for a more user-friendly term for technology that followed IEEE 802.11 specifications. A brand consulting agency commissioned by The WiFi Alliance, Interbrand, developed the term.

Try These Steps To Increase Your Wi

  • Place your wireless router or gateway in an open area in the middle of your house.

  • Tweak your router settings for optimal performance.

  • For the best wireless experience, consider a new wireless router and PC that supports the 5 GHz 802.11ax standard with the latest Intel® Wi-Fi 6 technology.

  • If necessary, install a repeater or range extender to boost the wireless signal of your router.

What Is A Good Download Speed

A good download speed for most households is 10 Mbps per person. Of course, what a good download speed is for you heavily depends on what you do online and how many devices are on your home network. For basic web surfing or email, 10 Mbps is enough to give you a seamless online experience.

Video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, on the other hand, are some of the most bandwidth-intensive activities that people engage in. If you have several TVs streaming movies along with iPads streaming YouTube, youre going to want a download speed that can do some heavy lifting if you want to avoid the wrath that buffering brings.

Not sure what speed your devices need to keep functioning smoothly? You can use our How Much Speed Do I Need? Tool. Itll help you know exactly how much download speed you need to have a seamless internet experience at home.

Why You Should Care About Your Internet Speed

Which way should your routers antennas point? Does it REALLY affect your WiFi Internet speed?

Its generally helpful to know how fast your Internet is. Faster is always better, but most importantly, you need certain speed grades to do specific tasks.

Take video streaming one of the most bandwidth-taxing online activities for example youll generally need a minimum download speed of:

  • 3 Megabits per second for DVD quality.
  • 5Mbps for HD quality.
  • 25Mbps for Blu-ray quality.
  • 80Mbps for 8K video.

Keep in mind that this is the speed required by a single stream. If you have more than one person streaming simultaneously, you generally need to multiply those numbers with the concurrent clients to figure out the necessary real-time bandwidth.

Also, there are a lot more online applications than streaming. Some of these applications such as automatic updates even occur within a connected device without you getting involved.

So yes, again, faster Internet is always better. But theres more than the download speed when it comes to the Internet.

Ping And Latency: Does It Matter

Latency is a measurement of the amount of time it takes for data to be transmitted from one point to another. Ping is often used interchangeably to describe this, but in fact, a ping is simply the act of hailing a certain receiver. Under this definition, latency is a measurement of how quickly you can ping the server you are trying to reach.

So, is latency a real concern when deciding which service provider to choose from?

Honestly, the majority of users will likely not be impacted by latency. Latency is more of an issue for satellite internet users as it takes longer for data to travel and is more susceptible to interference than wired internet connections . Competitive gamers serious about getting the best connection will definitely want to look into minimizing this number by either upgrading to a cable or fiber internet connection or connecting their gaming device directly to their modem/router.

Too Many Devices Using The Network At The Same Time

Many devices connected to your WiFi network at a time also cause a huge decrease in WiFi speed, especially if they are joining in bandwidth-heavy activities like streaming Netflix, downloading large files, or online gaming.

Well, if you check WiFi download speed at hours when your internal WiFi traffic is overloaded, then you will find your test results are much slower than usual.

Maximum Data Rate And Connection Speed Are Different Things

To begin with, many users incorrectly focus on the connection speed , which is displayed in the connection information. For example, in the Windows operating system, it is shown in the ‘Speed’ field on the ‘General’ tab of the ‘Status’ window of the wireless connection.

The wireless adapter driver displays this number. It shows what connection speed at the physical layer is currently used within the selected standard, i.e. the operating system only reports the current physical connection rate .

The actual bandwidth of the connection may be significantly lower during data transmission. The real data transfer rate depends on many factors, such as 802.11n access point settings, the distance between the client and access point, the number of wireless client adapters simultaneously connected to it, etc. The difference between the connection speed that Windows shows and actual data rates are primarily due to the amount of service data, wireless packet loss, and retransmission costs.

How To Check Your Internet Speed

It usually takes me about a week to finish evaluating a router. For Wi-Fi throughput speed, I use the same test method above. That means theres a server that connects to the router in question via a wired connection.

Important note: My testing method requires the router to a Gigabit LAN port to work. For this reason, I generally dont review routers that use the old Fast Ethernet wired standard, nor should you consider them.

After that, I use various high-end Wi-Fi clients to conduct the throughput tests. The following are the general specs of my equipment, which I, by the way, upgrade quite frequently I will update this post when the changes are significant enough.

What Internet Speed Do I Need Quick Tips

  • Netflix says you need 5 Mbps to stream full HD content and 25 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD content, but you’ll want faster speeds if you plan to connect several devices at once. The same holds true for other streaming services and game streaming services like Twitch.
  • Multiple devices demand more bandwidth. If you’re planning to stream 4K video content and have multiple devices connecting to your network simultaneously, seriously consider investing in faster download speeds, like 200 Mbps, which should work for most households.
  • Consider Gigabit, if it’s available. Serious data-hogs will want faster speeds and more bandwidth. Where it’s available, Gigabit speed internet plans are the best you can get for home connections.
  • Know your speeds. Use one of the best speed test apps to check your internet connection speed and determine whether you’re really getting the bandwidth you’re paying for.
  • Check your Wi-Fi connection. Sometimes the problem is with your network and not your ISP. See our guide on how to make Wi-Fi faster for some quick tips.

What Is A Good Upload Speed

Generally, a good upload speed to shoot for is 5 Mbps. However, most of the time, you dont have to worry about upload speed when choosing an internet plan. Asymmetric DSL usually has speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, while cable internet can have upload speeds from 5 Mbps to 50 Mbps.

For most online activities, even ADSLs 1.5 Mbps is more than enough for a smooth internet experience. Upload speed becomes much more important if you want to use video chat, upload high-resolution images, or livestream video from your home.

If you use your home network for work, school, or streaming on a regular basis, ADSLs low upload speeds are definitely going to be a problem. At the very minimum, youre going to want to find a cable provider that has upload speeds on the high end, between 25 Mbps and 50 Mbps.

An even better solution for those who rely on uploading is fiber, as long as its available in your area. Fiber-optic networks have symmetrical upload speeds, which means if you have a 1 Gbps connection, you have 1 Gbps upload and 1 Gbps download speeds. Fiber is also the most reliable type of connection, making your livestream much less likely to have issueseven if you stream at peak-use times.

What Is Considered Slow Internet

Download speeds less than 25 Mbps are too slow to be considered broadband or good home Wi-Fi. With these speeds, users may experience buffering when streaming video, difficulty connecting multiple devices and other internet connectivity issues.

The FCC does recommend speeds less than 25 Mbps for many online activities, including streaming SD and HD video, gaming online and downloading music. However, these are minimum speed recommendations and do not account for connecting multiple devices or other factors that may slow your internet speeds.
