How To Find Your Router’s Ip Address On The Router Itself
Many wireless routers have their IP address or an URL that leads to their IP address written on the back or bottom. Go to your router, and look on all its sides. You should find a sticker, like the one on our ASUS RT-AX82U. There should be an entry like the one we highlighted in the picture below.
The Router IP address on an ASUS RT-AX82U
TIP: If you have an ASUS router with Wi-Fi 6, the default IP address is 192.168.50.1. If you have an older router with Wi-Fi 5, the default IP address is 184.108.40.206.
Finding Ip Address Of Router
First, you need to access your WiFi router by locating the IP address of your router. Most of the time it is either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
However, if you need to figure out the IP, here’s how:
In Windows you will need to load up a command prompt and enter ipconfig. Mac users will use netstat -nr and Linux users will use route. You will see something similar to the image below in Windows. What you are looking for is the Default Gateway. My router IP is 192.168.1.1.

What Is The Difference Between Ipv4 And Ipv6
IPv6 stands for IP Version 6. This newer implementation enables a wider scope for issued addresses. In total there can be 2^128 addresses. These are generally displayed in a hexadecimal format. Since the amount of addresses within the IPv4 format is limited and more and more devices worldwide are being connected to the internet and new format had to be introduced. IPv6 enables a wider range of addresses and ensures, that new devices can be connected to the world wide web.
Beef Up Your Network Security
Even if you discover that a neighbor is stealing your Wi-Fi, you don’t need to hunt them down and start a fussyou can just kick them off with a change in router security. Head back to your router’s web interface and find the option to change your password . If you don’t have a password, you absolutely need to start using one, and it needs to be strong. Without a password, your personal information is up for grabs to any amateur hacker that drives by. Choose WPA2 for the password type, since it’s far more difficult to crack than the now-outdated WEP.
If WPS is turned on, you should turn it off, since this feature makes it easier for people to crack your Wi-Fi password. If you want to let guests on your Wi-Fi without giving them access to your devices and information, you can always enable your router’s guest network, or simply wirelessly.
If you already had a passwordmaybe it was weak and easy for your neighbors to guesschanging it to something new should be sufficient to kick them off. Of course, you’ll also have to re-authenticate all of your devices, but you should be able to rest a little easier knowing that all the devices on your network belong to you.

Is My Public Or Private Ip Address Permanent
No, typically all IP addresses are dynamic, meaning they frequently change.
Public IP addresses assigned by internet providers generally last for 14 days. However, the address will change each time you reboot the device connected directly to your modem.
Private IP addresses assigned by your router typically last for 24 hours. Again, this number may change if you reboot the device connected to your router. It will also change if you access a different network, like connecting to Wi-Fi at your local coffee shop.
The only time your IP address doesnt change is when its a static number. Internet providers generally assign static IP addresses to enterprise clients as part of a paid business plan. However, you can assign static private IP addresses to your devices through the router if you need to forward specific types of data.

Why Do I Need To Know My Ip Address
So, your IP address is basically your footprint. Youâll need it for your internet to work correctly. Thatâs because all networks work using protocols to allow for access and interaction with the greater internet. You can think of your IP address as a little tracker that shows the internet where youâve been and what youâve been doing. It also reveals your location. Sounds spooky? It can be. Thatâs why a lot of people hide their IP address â more on that in future posts.

And What Is The Netmask
The netmask allows the same IP address to be used for two devices. For example, you could have the address 220.127.116.11 under two different masks making them serve to identify both. The masks are also those that allow to separate the networks in the different categories that we have already explained. The netmask is the one that dictates how many networks can be created and how many hosts can exist according to the kind of private IP we have. Remember that we already know what the types of IP classes are, we saw them above. As a general rule and sure that you have seen it thousands of times, the main network mask that exists is 255.255.255.0 , which is the one assigned to type C networks .
- For class A IP addresses : 255.0.0.0
- For class B IP addresses : 255.255.0.0
- For class C IP addresses : 255.255.255.0
Without entering into a lot of very technical data or the reason, blocks 255 represent the amount of networks that can be and the numbers 0 how many hosts there can be . It is not that there can be 255 networks and 0 hosts. That is the human translation so that we can understand that if we translate 255.255.255.0 to binary code, it will be such a code: 111111111111111111111100000000 . Would you remember that number of bits of the binary code? Those 1 and 0 are the ones that dictate the type of network, the limit of networks that may exist and the hosts that may exist .

Who Is Connected To My Wifi
The most convenient way to find whos connected to your WiFi is through the routers dashboard/web interface. By logging in to your routers web interface, you get the most accurate picture of which devices are connected to your router.
Additionally, most modern-day routers maintain logs where a record of past and current connections, along with the IP address of every connected device and its name, is maintained.
Software and applications such as Wireless Network Watcher and Whos on My WiFi are an easy way to find out whos connected to your WiFi network and potentially even hogging your bandwidth.

Find A Routers Ip Address From Online Databases
There are several sites online with databases that include all router manufacturers and the default IP addresses used on many of their models. One site we like is . Its default router list contains data about many brands. Try it out, and see if it helps.
Routers Login has the default IP for many routers
One downside we noticed to such websites is that they have not been updated to include recent router models, especially not routers with Wi-Fi 6, which tend to use different default IP addresses than older models. If you have a newer router and such sites dont include your specific router, the other methods we presented should help.
Logging Into The Router
Once you get the default gateway you need to enter it in to your web browser’s address bar. Once you enter the address, a login screen or prompt will appear. You will need the username and password for your router.
Common router default usernames and passwords are:Linksys Use admin for both username and password.Netgear Use admin for username and password for the password.
If you used the default username or password, the next step would be to change the default password. In the “Administration” section of the Linksys router you will find “Management,” as seen below. In the “Management” area you can change your router access password. Make sure to keep track of this password. If the password is lost you will have to reset the router to factory defaults and lose all your settings. Once this is finished, be sure to save your settings.
