What Is A Wi
Think of a Wi-Fi extender, also known as a Wi-Fi booster, as a second router for your home. A Wi-Fi extender is a device that connects to your router to extend your Wi-Fi connection to the parts of your home that are currently Wi-Fi dead zones. A certain part of the home may be unable to connect to the Wi-Fi due to walls, furniture obstructions or distance from the router. A Wi-Fi extender would be placed in those Wi-Fi dead zones in order to increase Wi-Fi coverage throughout the house.
How Should I Set It Up
Setup is different from device to device, so carefully consult the instruction manual for whichever extender you end up buying. In general, the biggest step will be simultaneously pressing the WPS buttons on both the extender and the router to establish a connection between the two.
If your extender has an ethernet port on it, you should see if you can connect it to your router that way. Wired is always faster and more secure than wireless, after all.
The last thing to keep in mind is that the network strength coming out of the extender is probably not going to match the signal coming out of the router. It’s an unfortunate side effect of the extension process, but it’s better than not having WiFi in your living room at all.

The Second Floor Lacks Internet
You picked the perfect, inconspicuous location to install a wireless router: downstairs in the family room on the entertainment center. But as anyone in an upstairs bedroom discovered, the walls and physical distance between the router and the people using it is too much.
Think vertically when it comes to the spaces where youre looking to add coverage. Install a Wi-Fi extender in the upstairs room thats closest to being directly above where the router is located.
For instance, if your daughters bedroom is directly above the family room where the router is located, plug the wireless extender into one of the outlets in that room rather than in the master bedroom down the hallway. The strong signal received close to the router will easily bounce coverage to the other upstairs Wi-Fi users.

How Do Wifi Extenders Work
Some WiFi extenders known as “powerline” extenders use the electrical wiring in your home or business to carry high-speed internet traffic over a wired connection through your house, before converting it to a wireless signal.
Other WiFi extenders rely purely on wireless transmission to extend your signal to access points in your home.
How I Tested Them
We’re still working from home here in 2021, so for my second round of at-home range extender tests, I followed the same playbook as I did in 2020. In short, I ran lots and lots and lots of speed tests.
I started out by measuring the average internet speeds in five different parts of my home, a 1,300 square-foot shotgun-style house with an incoming AT& T fiber internet connection of 300Mbps. I started towards the front of the house in the living room, where the router sits, then worked my way back to my home’s back bathroom — a common dead zone whenever I’m running speed tests here. Even with an AX1500 Wi-Fi 6 router running my Wi-Fi network traffic, speeds in that back bathroom dropped to averages of 15Mpbs for a Wi-Fi 5 client device and 50Mbps for a Wi-Fi 6 device . Upload speeds are typically in the single digits and sometimes the connection drops you outright.
Those baseline speeds are represented by the gray columns in the test results below. See how they drop off in that back bathroom?
The top chart shows you the average speeds in each room when I ran my speed tests on a six-year-old laptop with an aging Wi-Fi 5 radio. For the bottom chart, I ran my speed tests on an iPhone 12 Pro with full support for Wi-Fi 6. All of the extenders boosted the back bathroom speeds for both of them, but some did a better job than others.

Why Is My Network Slow After Using A Wi
First, check to confirm the status of the indicator. If the color is solid blue, it means the signal strength received by the Wi-Fi extender is strong enough .
But if it is solid red or has no light at all, the strength is weak. In that case, you will need to move your Wi-Fi extender a little closer and make sure the antenna is upward and vertical to the ground.
How Do I Know The Extension Is Successful
- Search to see if the SSID of the Wi-Fi extender is still in the factory setting. If that is the case, then the extension wasnt successful.
- Check the exact color status of the indicator by making the room a bit darker so you can see it clearly.
- Log in to the interface of the Wi-Fi extender to confirm if the extended state is expanded. If the extension is successful, you may then want to put the antenna upward and vertical to the ground. If it is unsuccessful, consider changing its angle.
- You can also put the router and Wi-Fi extender closer, and observe if the indicator gets solid blue.

How Do I Reset My Rock Space Wi
First, power on the device. Next, when the PWR LED is on, look for a paper clip or any other sharp object and then press and hold the RESET button. Keep it pressed down for about 5-6 seconds, then release it.
After that, the PWR LED will turn solid on again. Once it is solid on, it means your Rock Space Wi-Fi extender has been successfully reset.
Choosing The Right Model
The first step when setting up a range extender is simply to decide whether you want to buy a compact model that plugs directly into a mains power socket, or a larger model that will need to sit on a desk or shelf.
The plug-in models are really convenient, although a desktop model may have additional features, such as Ethernet ports, which can come in handy as well. Well go with this RE650 extender from TP-Link, which is a fast and affordable plug-in option for around $120/£80/AU$180. However, the set-up process will be similar for desktop models as well.

Optimal Wifi Extender Placement
After buying the best Wifi Extender suited for your need, your next task is to actually install it and place it in the right place. Having the wrong or bad physical placement is the number one reason why your internet disconnect or dropping connection often.
First of all, think of your WiFi extender as an access point or another pseudo-router that relays information from your devices to your main router wirelessly. This means that you will need to follow all the best practices of a Router Placement.
Secondly, ensure that a full connection is available between your wireless extender to the main router. If the wireless connection between your WiFi extender to the router is slow or weak, your speed is limited to the slowest connection even if your devices have full bar connection to the Wifi Extender, you will also lose connection often.
If the signal between the extender to the router is not stable and drops often, that means your relayed signal to the main router will be unstable and dropped accordingly.
Your next step is to figure out the best location for the Extender to actually reach the deadzones around your house. Think about the areas that you spend the most time with your devices, then make that calculated choice. Some extenders have directional antennae to help you reach those spots and you should use that to your advantage.
How Does The Wi
To purchase the most ideal Wi-Fi booster for use at home or in your business premises know how it works first. Essentially, a booster starts working once it has established a connection between the router or access point and your wireless device such as a laptop or cell phone with wi-fi turned on. For instance, to use the web connection on your cell phone without using a lot of data in your allotted data package, it would be wise to turn the access point or router on. The transmission is immediately sent by the router. If it doesnt reach your device like a tablet in some corner, a wi-fi booster will help with such a situation.
The transmission is captured by the booster and returned or pushed into your cell phone with wi-fi feature turned on. The wireless sends booster the information before the router receives the transmission. After the router has accepted the information, it relays it to the web servers. Having completed this, the process begins once again.
The swiftness of the process actually depends on the router and type of Wi-Fi booster you have selected and each boosters standard. For example the common standard most Wi-Fi reception boosters have is a Wireless N . This supports a maximum of 300 Mbps network bandwidth. Per se, the standard provides an excellent speed and range and also very interference resistant in its coverage.

What Is The Coverage Range Of Wireless Extenders
The range you get will depend on the extender you choose, as well as the layout of your home and distance between devices. Factors like the thickness of your walls and floors, appliances, and other obstructions can affect your signal range. To extend your signal over a longer range, consider a premium extender, as these tend to offer superior coverage.
Which One Should I Get
Assuming you’ve done your due diligence and decided you do, in fact, need a WiFi extender, there are way too many options to keep track of. They come in a variety of styles and prices, so searching can be a bit intimidating.
A ton of WiFi extenders tend to plug directly into wall outlets, which is probably going to be the most convenient option for most people. There are also extenders that lay flat on desktops, and while those come with their own benefits, flat surface space is at a premium in many apartments.
Last year, we ranked the Amped Wireless TITAN-EX AC1900 as the best overall extender you can buy. It’s a desktop WiFi repeater with multiple ethernet ports if you care about wired connections, but it also costs more than $100. The TP-Link extender is a little more manageable at just over $60 right now and it plugs into a wall socket, for added convenience.

How To Improve Your Wi
After you’ve gone through the setup process, you’ll choose exactly where in the home you want your extender to stay.
You probably have a good idea about where in your home you start to lose signal, but that doesn’t correlate to the position you should be choosing for your extender.
Most apps for Wi-Fi extenders will have a status bar or notification feature that displays the router signal. Keep the app open while you continue to move the wireless extender around your home. Place it in a location that provides a strong signal from your router but is still further than where you normally lose signal. You can make sure every corner of your home is covered. You might have to play around with distances to ensure even coverage in the areas where the router and extender signals meet.
Some Wi-Fi extender apps will even let you know if the position of your extender is in the perfect location to cover the home while still connected to the router.
Multiple Users Mean Slow Loading Times
If youre finding that your homes internet connection diminishes as more people come home and log on to the network, an extender can help them to access the network no matter where they are in the home. Just make sure that youre using the most current iteration of Wi-Fi range extender technology. You may also be inclined to get a stronger home Wi-Fi plan.
Its key that you use a dual-band Wi-Fi extender as the older, single-band extenders can actually slow down internet speeds as they attempt to provide a signal across great distances.
