Do Routers With Antennas Work Better

It depends. If it is an expensive router with external antennas, then yes it will be better. However, there are some expensive routers with internal antennas that out-perform many external antenna routers. This allows it to do beam-forming and dedicate a specific antennas to specific devices in specific directions.

Enable The Guest Network

Ethernet cables are no use if you want to use a phone or tablet on a second network. But some routers – even if they are older models – offer a guest network which provides internet access for guests but no way to poke around on your home network and access any of the devices connected to it.

You will need to log onto your routers web interface to find out if it has a guest network option. Usually thats disabled by default.

But where guest networks are supported, they usually also have a setting where you can restrict how much bandwidth guests can use. For example, if you have a 20Mbps broadband connection, setting the guest network to have 10% of the available bandwidth gives all guest users 2Mbps to share.

You will be able to set a network name a separate password for this network and its then simply a case of connecting all your kids devices to the new network and forgetting the old network so they cant reconnect to it.

An easier option is simply to change the password of the old network.

So Why Would I Want A Software

[WiFi Clinic] Why do I have asymmetric throughput? Page ...

ROI One of the key benefits of a software-selectable dual 5 GHz radio access point is ROI. For example, in many schools, the typical Wi-Fi deployment is one access point per classroom to account for the high-density nature of the client load. As a result, many WLAN Administrators end up turning off 2.4GHz radios on various neighboring access points to prevent CCI .

Whilst turning off some 2.4 GHz radios on your access points may improve network performance, it actually means youre only using half of the Access Point that you have invested in.

With a software-selectable dual 5 GHz access point, you can switch the 2.4GHz radios that would normally be switched off to prevent CCI to be a second 5GHz radio. This allows for greater client capacity and allows you to continue using the full potential of the access point.

High-Density Environments High Density or Very High Density are areas where clients are connecting to the WLAN within a small confined space. An example of a VHD or HD environment can be an auditorium, gymnasium, or cafeteria.

Due to the large number of clients wanting to connect to the WLAN, more access points than usual will be needed. More clients connecting to the WLAN, generally mean more bandwidth will be required which is not scalable on the 2.4 GHz band.

Manufacturing Environments Most manufacturing environments have an incredible amount of 2.4 GHz interference due to the challenging nature of Radio Frequency .

Can I Have Two Separate Wifi Routers Connected To Separate Internet Providers In The Same House

I have a slow internet connection. And I would Like to know if its wise to have another internet provider, and separate router in my house solely for gaming.

Id have my console and gaming pc connected to the new router/isp and my other devices, along with the rest of the household connected to the old one.

Would I be affording myself a faster connection? Or will this cause more grief, than good? Will it even work?

  • 5Technically, as long as there is sufficient channel separation and isn’t too much non-802.11 interference, it should work fine. But there is no reason that number of users couldn’t use one internet connection and a quality wireless router… Unless your Internet connection is garbage. Do not confuse “Internet” service with WiFi, they are two distinctly different things. acejavelinMar 1 ’18 at 18:52
  • they most likely will both use the nearest local major switch and both isp’s going through the same neighborhood routerMar 1 ’18 at 19:12
  • 1As pointed out by others, it is far more likely that the problem you are experiencing is due to WiFi, rather than the internet connection itself. You would therefor do good to connect your gaming pc with a LAN cable first to investigate if your problem really is the ISP or only related to poor WiFi.

The first thing you should consider is the fact that an internet service provider and a wireless router are not necessarily connected.

Yes, you absolutely can have two separate connections in your house.

Separate Wireless Networks In Your Own Home

If you have multiple wireless networks in your home that are set up on different pieces of equipment this can be even more disruptive than your neighbor’s network. If you need to have logins for the wireless network with different access levels, we recommend setting up a guest network with its own network name on the same router or access point as the primary network.

How To Delete Unused Or Duplicate Wi

Sometimes, duplicate Wi-Fi network profiles or SSIDs may appear all of a sudden with suffix 2, 3, and so forth, in the list of available Wi-Fi networks, all pointing to the same SSID. This post tells you how to remove the redundant Wi-Fi network connections or connections that you added some time ago but are no longer in use.

Editors note: Before proceeding, you should note that once the Wi-Fi profile is deleted the stored password for that profile is also cleared. Make sure you note down the Wi-Fi profile password and its settings if you think you will need them later. After removing the redundant profile, for some unknown reason, I had to input the WPA2-PSK key again for the original connection . While this may not necessarily be the same in your case, creating a Restore point or backing up the Wi-Fi profiles beforehand is suggested.

What Are The Disadvantages

How to Connect 2 Routers on the Same WiFi Network

The disadvantages associated with using multiple routers in one household is the technical setup that is required – youll have to configure a very specific setup to allow both routers to work properly on the same network, including your IP address settings and DHCP.

Many people looking to use two routers in one house are often looking for a way to extend their WiFi range to areas that arent currently covered by the existing setup. This isnt necessarily the best solution for this issue, with many options to boost WiFi range available which dont require such an extensive configuration. For example, a WiFi range extender device will provide a wider coverage across the home without having to edit IP address settings, whereas a mesh WiFi network will be able to offer whole home WiFi, which allows you to access the internet from every room in your home thanks to a blanket coverage system.

What’s The Difference Between 2

  • Yes you can. Here are some reasons to have more than one: 1. You might be sub-leasing part of your house and want to completely separate the two wifi networks 2. You often have important guests, and want them to have great bandwidth irregardless o..
  • How do I identify my 2.4 GHz band network? From your smartphone’s Wireless settings page, look at the names of your Wi-Fi networks. A 2.4 GHz network may have 24G, 2.4, or 24 appended to the end of the network name. For example: Myhomenetwork2.4 A 5 GHz network may have 5G or 5 appended to the end of the network name, for example.
  • The owner of the router needs to fix it. That’s why Windows recommends connecting to a different network. If you see this message when connecting to your Wi-Fi network, you should enable stronger Wi-Fi encryption. If your router is relatively new, it will have other options like WPA2 with AES, and you should switch to these
  • The wireless network is handled separately than the wired network. The wireless network can be turned off, and the wired network will still function. The wireless network should have a password set, to prevent unauthorized access. The ethernet connection doesn’t have that password setup, as you have to be physically present to plug in

    The Two Types Of Dual

Dual-band routers are routers which are capable of transmitting and receiving data using both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, either simultaneously or one at a time.

NOTE: To find out the difference between connecting to 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz band, click here.

There are two types of dual-band routers:

    • Selectable
    • Simultaneous

    Selectable

Selectable or plain dual-band routers can work on one frequency and allows you to select either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz at a time.

NOTE: If you are selecting the 5 GHz wireless network, ensure that your wireless devices and adapters have a 5 GHz capability. Otherwise, do not change the frequency of your router. For instructions on how to check your wireless adapters capability, click here.

    Simultaneous

Simultaneous dual-band routers are capable of receiving and transmitting on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies at the same time. This provides two independent and dedicated networks which allows more flexibility and bandwidth.

NOTE: To avoid interferences between the two wireless networks, personalize your routers 5 GHz network SSID and password. To learn how, click here.

    Why So Many Wifi Channels

Take a look at your WiFi router, whether its the one that came from your cable company or internet service provider or the one you bought for your company. If you check out the settings, youll notice that most WiFi router list two frequencies, usually 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Why waste time on two different frequencies?

First, lets explain frequency. Light has a constant speed. Its been about a hundred years since Einstein came along and revealed the discovery that no matter whats going on, light is always going at the same speed of about 190,000 miles in a second. Not bad for a little speck of energy.

But light isnt like a bunch of little bullets whizzing through the air until they hit your eye its more like waves traveling through the vacuum.

Light has both a speed and a frequency, the way that it moves up and down. It turns out while the speed doesnt change, the fact that the frequency can tell you how much energy is in the light wave.

So those frequencies, the way light moves up and down, actually matters when it comes to signals. Radio waves and microwaves are really light. The same stuff you see when the sun comes through your window at 5 AM in the morning, hits you in the eyes and makes you regret you were ever born. But unlike sunlight, you cant see radio waves with the naked eye.

Which lead to the big question: what frequency to use? Two competing ideas came out: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

The 80211 Standard And How It Has Influenced The Wi

The 802.11 standard is a family of wireless standards created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In this case, I will only comment on the ones that have been used the most in the routers that we have in our homes. Lets briefly talk about the 802.11 a, b, g, n, ac and ax standards.

The 802.11a revision was approved in 1999. This standard operates in the 5 GHz band with a maximum speed of 54 Mbit / s. The data rate is reduced to 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9 or 6 Mbit / s if necessary. It has a range of 20 km with special radii. It has not been a standard that has been used in the routers that we have at home.

The next one that we are going to discuss is the 802.11b standard that was also ratified in 1999. The maximum transmission speed is 11 Mbps, and it works in the 2.4 GHz band. In practice, the maximum transmission speed with this Standard is approximately 5.9 Mbit / s over TCP and 7.1 Mbit / s over UDP. An example that some of you may have had at home is the Zyxel Prestige 650.

Next, in June 2003 the modulation standard was approved: 802.11g , we could consider it as an evolution of 802.11b. Like the latter, it operates in the 2.4 GHz band, but operates at a maximum theoretical speed of 54 Mbit / s. However, the average would be 22 Mbit / s of actual transfer speed. It should be noted that it is compatible with standard B and uses the same frequencies. An example of a router in this category would be the Zyxel Prestige 660HW-D1.
