Why Is Xfinity Wifi So Slow

Improve The Performance Of Your Existing Network

If you can, it’s always a good idea to put your modem and router in a central room so you can cover your whole house. You can also put your router a little closer to the devices that need the most speed like a video streaming device or a game console.

For gaming, it’s always recommended to go wired if possible. A wired connection directly to your router is going to provide the most stable performance possible. You should also be able to get more consistent high speeds since a wire will be much less likely to have interference.

If you simply need more coverage on your Wi-Fi but you don’t want to or don’t have the option to upgrade your modem or router, you can order xFi Pods to add more coverage to your network. These are relatively small mesh Wi-Fi extenders that plug directly into the wall.

Is It Xfinity Or Is It You

The first step in diagnosing your slow Xfinity internet problem is figuring out whether its something wrong with Xfinitys network or something wrong inside your home network. It usually isnt complicated to suss out where the problem is based on the symptoms you experience.

  • You can tell its an issue with Xfinitys network when you have these issues:
  • Sudden loss of internet connection, even though your Wi-Fi signal is still strong
  • Slow speeds during certain times of day when a lot of people in your area get online
  • Fewer Mbps of bandwidth than your plan is supposed to give you

You can tell its an issue with your own home network when you have these issues:

  • Slow Wi-Fi connections even though wired connections are fine
  • More issues when multiple people in your home are using the internet
  • Increasingly slow speeds or network issues since the last time you restarted your equipment
  • Slow internet on one specific device

What To Do If Theres An Xfinity Network Outage

If you stop receiving an internet signal altogether, its probably a network outage. One symptom of this is still having a Wi-Fi signal but no connection to the internet.

A large section of Xfinitys network can experience a random outage for any number of reasons. Sometimes these outages are for maintenance or due to bad weather conditions. Either way, the best thing to do if theres an Xfinity network outage is to report it to Xfinity, which you can do by logging in to your Xfinity account and navigating to the Status Center.

In the Status Center, youll find an outage map to see if other people in your area have been affected. You can also opt in to text alerts from Xfinity so youll get progress reports about the networks status. Unfortunately, you cant really do anything if the network is down. Youll have to wait for Xfinity to fix the issue.

About Xfinity Internet & Comcast Internet

First of all, Comcast and Xfinity are the same things. What we mean is that Comcast is the parent company and Xfinity is the brand that they use for internet, TV, and home phone services. Both the names are used interchangeably by customers. To give you a better idea, lets talk about both Xfinity and Comcast separately.

Xfinity is the trade name of Comcast Cable Communications, LLC, which is a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation. This is the brand name they use to market consumer internet, cable television, telephone, and wireless services. The brand was first launched in 2010. Before that these services were marketed under the parent company name, Comcast.

Comcast Corporation was previously known as Comcast Holdings. It is a telecommunications conglomerate based in America, with its headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It happens to be the second-largest cable television and broadcasting company in the world in terms of revenue. The company is known to provide services in 40 states in the US and the District of Columbia. Comcast is the parent company of Xfinity, which means Xfinity internet is owned and operated by Comcast.

FIXED! Internet Keeps Shutting Off Or SLOW Internet! (COMCAST/XFINITY)!

The Xfinity speed test specifically tests on their network. It’s not testing your speeds across the internet because they have no control over the entire internet. Hop on over to the official support sub: r/Comcast_Xfinity/ if you want some help getting your speed issues resolved.

We’re Comcast customers in Chicago in one of the areas of the Northside where there’s no other good ISP options. We’ve had average-to-mediocre network speeds the last few years and suddenly this month they are unbearably slow. Lucky to get 10 MBPS sitting next to modem. Signal occasionally cuts out completely for 5-10 min at a time.

Anyway, I hop on chat support with Xfinity today . They walk me through all the typical checks etc and ask me to run a speed test. Now, I use different speed test sites every day at work so I naturally click over to one of those. After seeing my breathtakingly slow speed on other sites, I notice the chat agent has sent me a link to the Xfinity speed test site. I click that, and WOAH BABY my internet is blazing fast! Except that it isn’t. It’s just the test returning a false positive.

I screengrabbed it. Link to vid in comments.

Anyone else go through this with Comcast? Could they really be intentionally fudging this thing or is there a less sinister explanation?

Is The Issue From Them Or From Me

To diagnose we are going to take several things into consideration. To ease it up for you, weve prepared a number of symptoms, which mean that the issue is coming from Xfinity and not you.

  • WiFi is good but sudden loss or slow internet connection.
  • Less data than your plan provides.
  • Slow internet even with a wired connection.
  • Slow internet on a specific device.
  • First time experiencing this issue.
  • If you are experiencing more than 1 of the above-listed symptoms you should call Xfinity right away.

You can also reach them via email, and hopefully, the issue would be on their side. If not lets jump right into the solutions.

Why Do I Need To Reset My Router Every Day

All home routers need to be restarted periodically to start fresh with no accumulated memory or processor baggage. Basically, the router acts like traffic cop for your local area network , moving data while keeping your kids away from racy online content and apportioning IP addresses to a variety of devices.

New Modem / Router Was Not The Answer

I thought at least Id find out if my slow internet problem was my modem, or if it was Comcast giving me the internet speed problem. With my having one of their modems / routers, Comcast would have to find the slow WiFi problem no matter if it was on their end or my end. Thats what $11 a month would get me.

The Arris modem / router was super easy to setup with port forwarding, etc. and the WiFi 5 GHz wireless network worked amazingly well for my server. Notice I said WiFi 5 GHz worked well. I have Comcast Blast and I am now downloading at 179 180 Mbps with uploads around 12.0 Mbps on WiFi! But, a new Comcast modem / router is not the fix for slow WiFi I want to show you. You dont need to go get a Comcast modem / router, or likely any new modem / router.

Why Do Xfinity Wifi Hotspots Keep Disconnecting

Xfinity cannot control all the places people put hotspots. Sometimes the hotspots are placed in locations that result in spotty signal strength or even dead zones zombie hotspots. Thats why you may see youre connected to xfinitywifi, but not able to access any website.

If you are on the move you could also run into problems when moving between different hotspots. If youre connected to the xfinitywifi network, your iPhone or Android smartphone will navigate from one Xfinity WiFi hotspot to another and even other public hotspots . So, there are many chances you stumble upon a non-working WiFi hotspot.

Plus, by default, as youre moving around, you will be passed around from hotspot to hotspot, like in the case of a cellular network. Unfortunately, mobile devices dont handle WiFi handoffs smoothly and thats one of the reasons why Xfinity hotspots keep disconnecting. Smartphones are bad at detecting poor Wi-Fi networks, and they default to Wi-Fi instead of LTE when its available. Connecting to a bad Wi-Fi hotspot is often the same as having no Internet at all.

    Get A Faster Internet Plan

Symptom: Your internet provides the speeds advertised in your internet plan but still seems too slow, especially when multiple people are online

Your Xfinity internet might be slow because you dont have enough bandwidth in your current plan to keep up with your internet use. This may especially be the case if youve started working or learning from home.

If your router isnt the issue, but your internet still seems to get sluggish when there are multiple people online, it might be time to get a better plan.

Is It Xfinity/comcast Internet Or Is It You

Coming back to the main topic, if you are having slow internet speed, you need to first find out whether the issue is with Comcast or with your home network. For this, you need to diagnose your slow Comcast internet problem. It is not always difficult to find out the root of the issue. You just have to focus on the symptoms and it will help you to find out the reason for slow internet speed.

If you notice any of these things, then you know the problem is with Comcast:

  • Sudden loss of internet connection, even when you have a strong Wi-Fi signal.
  • Lesser bandwidth than what you are supposed to get from your plan.
  • Slow internet speed during certain times of the day.
  • You know the problem is with your home network if you notice the following things:

    • Poor Wi-Fi connection even when the wiring is fine.
    • Slow internet speed only on a specific device.
    • A lot of network issues and reducing speed.
    • More issues arise when you have more people in the house.

Try Not To Connect Too Many Devices To Wi

Why your Comcast and CenturyLink internet is slow and how to fix it.

Similar to the case of network congestion, if too many devices are connected to your home network at the same time, then the speed reduces for all devices. Sometimes, the Wi-Fi will just start disconnecting.

Your router may also not support too many devices simultaneously. So, you can avoid this situation by limiting the number of devices that can connect to your network at a given time.

    What Are Some Solutions Then

Xfinity WiFi booster: you can get a Xfinity WiFi extender to help boost signal in areas of your house where the connectivity is not so great . OneLink Wifi is an excellent option on this front, working with all router types. Its easy to install and helps give you better coverage without taking up too much space or adding clutter to your home!

This unit will work well for those who want their life back at home but dont have enough money right now it wont break the bank like other options might do. Alternatively, some people opt for a new router altogether when theyre experiencing issues because it fixes everything more quickly than buying something else separately.

You may also need to think about purchasing the type of router you need for your particular home. For example, if you have an older house with thick walls and appliances that are all on the same circuit breaker then a Xfinity Powerline adapter might be the best solution. A WiFi extender might not be enough to fix everything in this case it would make sense to buy new hardware instead or at least get someone out there to do some troubleshooting work!
