Will Wifi Extender Improve Speed

Get A Stronger Antenna

DOES A WIFI EXTENDER INCREASE YOUR INTERNET SPEED? 2019

Most WiFi routers come with small, weak antennas. Its not that manufacturers want to save every cent they can, but powerful WiFi antennas tend to be hideously large. Compared to the antenna that came with your router, which probably is just a few inches tall and has around 4 dB gain, a 10-dB antenna can be anywhere between 10 to 15 inches tall.

But if you dont mind the size, a new, powerful WiFi antenna is a great way how you can boost WiFi at home or office without buying a new router.

There are several different types of WiFi antennas, but the only type you need to care about is the common rubber duck antenna, which is an electrically short monopole antenna that consists of a springy wire in the shape of a narrow helix, sealed in a rubber or plastic jacket to protect the antenna.

Such antennas use the same RP-SMA connector, and there are many different models available on Amazon and other online stores. Some even come with a handy extension cable that allows you to place the antenna farther away from your router to achieve optimal signal distribution.

To boost WiFi signal, you need to purchase an antenna with more gain than your current one. The gain of an antenna system relative to an isotropic radiator at radio frequencies is expressed in dBi, or decibels relative to isotropic. Most home routers come with small antennas, whose gain tends to be between 45 dBi. Replacing such antenna with a 9 dBi antenna should provide excellent signal boost.

An Additional Wireless Network

With a WiFi repeater you create an additional WiFi network in your home. In addition to your existing network, there will also be a network of the WiFi repeater. It has a different name. For WiFi throughout the house you have to set up both networks on your laptop or smartphone. Your devices connect to the new network when the old one is no longer available. That means you lose your internet connection for a few seconds when you walk around the house.

How Does A Wifi Extender Boost Your Signal

A WiFi extender connects to your router and then becomes part of your network. The extender uses radio waves to distribute your internet connection as a wireless signal between access points.

Extenders are available in single- or dual-band frequencies, just like routers. Learn more about the two frequencies.

Simple Tips To Boost Your Wifi

Tired of videos buffering when youre binge watching on Netflix? Are there places in your home where surfing speeds slow down to a crawl? The broadband plan you signed up for promises blazing fast speeds, but thats not what you are getting in the living room. Sometimes a simple change in your home network can crank up the speed and make a huge improvement on your surfing, streaming, and gaming experience. If youre suffering with slow speeds and patchy Wi-Fi coverage, here are several things to try to boost WiFi:

What Is A Wifi Booster

Mini WiFi Repeater, Range Extender Wireless 300Mbps Access ...

If you have a weak signal coming into your home or business that could use some improvement, a WiFi Booster plugged into a power source can amplify that signal to make it more useful. Its function is to take the signal received through your router, and actually creates a stronger one that can be broadcast to a nearby area. You will be able to work in more areas of your house with a stronger connection. It will allow more members of your household to enjoy the signal as well.

The second option is to look at your equipment and make sure it is built for your needs. New technologies come on the market all the time and if your router or antennas are older, you might want to check out whats new. All routers are not the same and some cannot handle the amount of signal you might need. Check the settings on your router and internet to make sure they are optimized. Rebooting your system clears information from the memory and gives it a fresh start. Also, check out your antenna and see if it is optimal for your desired signal and consider an upgrade to be able to receive more bandwidth from the provider.

A third option is to check out a booster or extender. Each of these devices takes your existing signal and manipulates it for a different purpose. The extender will rebroadcast the signal to dead areas of your home. The booster can amplify the signal up to 32 times its strength. Depending on your needs, one of these can make a big difference.

This is a lot faster than the earlier speeds you posted. It is a bit puzzling that you are getting faster upload speeds with the extender.

The extender needs to relay everything to the router – and with the ex2700 that is done through a single radio. That generally cuts the wifi throughput in about half . The upload bottleneck is your ISP speed, not the wifi.

Do Wifi Extenders Reduce Speed

In todays world of technology, having at least a computer, tablet or phone is essential in every home. But getting a stable WiFi connection for your devices is what helps you get more things done and stay connected to everything relevant in real-time. With all the technology comes the techy lingo that goes along with it.

You may hear the terms WiFi extender and WiFi repeater used interchangeably however, they are different types of WiFi boosters. A WiFi booster is a device that connects to your existing wireless network and re-broadcasts the signal. This can help to extend the wireless network to areas in your home or office where the signal is low. When it comes to WiFi boosters, a WiFi extender is the best option for fast, reliable WiFi.

Whats the Difference?

While both WiFi extenders and WiFi repeaters serve the same function there are key differences that make WiFi extenders the better choice.

WiFi Repeaters

A WiFi repeater connects to your WiFi network wirelessly in much the same way as a smartphone or laptop. Because the connection to your router is wireless, it is susceptible to interference. Cordless phones, microwaves, stereos, and other electronic devices can interfere with your wireless connection and cause it to slow down or drop out.

How to Improve WiFi Speed and Signal

Before you blame the Wi-Fi, make sure the internet coming into your house is performing as it should. Find an Ethernet cable and plug your computer directly into your modemyou may need a USB to Ethernet adapter if your laptop doesnt have an Ethernet port.

Run a speed test to see your internet speed. If it doesnt match the speed on your internet bill, you may need to call your ISP or replace your modem. If your speed test does match your internet bill, but it still seems slow, it may be time to pony up for a better plan.

If the modem seems okay, try running the test again wirelessly, standing right next to the router. If you get similarly good speeds next to the router, but not elsewhere in the house, then your Wi-Fi coverage may be to blame. If your internet is still slow standing right next to the router, you may have some outdated gear that needs an upgrade.

Measure Wired Internet Performance

If youve tried the 10 above-described tips for improving wireless internet performance without any success, then its time to shift your focus from your WiFi and measure wired internet performance. To do that, you need an Ethernet cable and a laptop or desktop computer with an Ethernet port.

  • Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to your modem.
  • Connect the other end to your laptop or desktop computer.
  • Open the following address in a web browser: .
  • Compare the results with the speeds advertised by your internet service provider.
  • We recommend you repeat the wired internet performance test several times, preferably at different times of the day. Once youre certain that your internet service provider is to blame, send them the results of your tests and ask them to fix the problem. If they fail to do so, then its probably time to switch to a different internet service provider because even the best tips on how to increase WiFi signal wont help you.

Set Up A Mesh Wifi System

Sometimes, a single router no matter how capable cant reliably cover the entire living space with a strong WiFi signal. In such cases, its best to set up a mesh WiFi system, which consists of the main router and multiple satellite units that together provide seamless WiFi coverage.

Some of the most popular mesh WiFi systems available today come from Asus, Eero, Orbi, and Google, and we offer some recommendations later in this article. Whats great about mesh WiFi systems in general is that you can expand them depending on your needs. This means that you can start with just one main router and one satellite unit and upgrade only if your WiFi is still not performing up to your expectations.

The Domain Name System is responsible for converting domain names into IP addresses . By default, your modem is most likely configured to use your internet service providers DNS server, whose performance may not be the best.

The good news is that most modems let you change your DNS address, which is often the easiest way how to boost WiFi performance. There are many public DNS servers you can choose from, including Googles DNS server or Cloudflares DNS server .

To help you pick the best DNS server, we recommend you download and run Domain Name Speed Benchmark. This free Windows application offers features designed to enable serious DNS performance investigation, and you can use it to find the fastest DNS server in your area with just a few clicks:

  • Switch to the Nameservers tab.
  • Go to the Conclusions tab after the benchmark completes.
  • Once youve picked the best DNS server available, you need to go to your modems settings and replace the default DNS address with the DNS address of the new server.

Where Should I Place My Wi

If you have a Wi-Fi dead spot in your home, then the positioning of a Wi-Fi extender is crucial. The extender needs to be in good contact with the router, so dont place it in the dead spot itself but on the edge of your routers current coverage. As these extenders plug into a socket, you may be limited by their placement, but you can always put one on the end of an extension cord if need be.

How Does A Wifi Range Extender Work

A WiFi extender doesnt replace your existing router, it works together with it, making the original signal stronger.

WiFi extenders work like stereo amplifiers used for driving hi-fi systems. They use electric power from a power supply to increase the strength of the original WiFi signal, transmitting the amplified signal in the air. To accomplish this feat of engineering, WiFi range extenders contain two WiFi antennas: one is used for signal capture and the other one for signal transmission.

A WiFi extender is often referred to as booster, repeater, or WiFi extender, but all these names mean the same thing: a device that captures a WiFi signal, amplifies it, and transmits it.

Most wireless range extenders plug into the standard electrical outlet. They can be then set up with the help of the WPS button or a dedicated smartphone app. WPS is a network security standard that allows WiFi-enabled devices to communicate without entering long passphrases.

With modern WiFi extenders, you get to enjoy the same robust encryption protocols as you get with your main WiFi router, so theres no need to worry about your privacy. However, you should be prepared for some speed loss. Some of the best WiFi extenders on the market can rebroadcast WiFi signal with only a negligible speed loss, but most single-band extenders lose up to 50 percent of the original bandwidth.

    What Exactly Is Wifi

For most people, internet and WiFi are the same. However, they are two different concepts. WiFi is a wireless connection that links devices wirelessly, without the aid of connected cables, to the internet. People connect to the internet through a router, which produces an initial signal, making internet connection possible. Picture an imaginary fishing net reaching throughout your home or office.

If you are within the net , you have access to WiFi signal, and therefore, a connection to the internet.

    Extend Range With A Wi

The first Wi-Fi booster is a Wi-Fi range extender. A Wi-Fi extender picks up the Wi-Fi signal sent out by your router and lengthens it without negatively impacting overall internet speed. For example, if you get very poor service on a second floor and want to watch YouTube TV at night, you can place a Wi-Fi extender in a bedroom or bathroom. And, you can use multiple Wi-Fi range extenders to increase signal strength in different areas of your home. One key thing to note: check the signal on your router typically a number such as 802.11 and find a Wi-Fi extender that matches it.
